Habemus Papam: Leo XIV
9 May 2025Robert Francis Prevost has been elected by the Conclave as the 267th Bishop of Rome, successor of Peter. He is the first Pope from the Order of Saint Augustine, having served as Superior General of the Order for two consecutive terms, from 2001 to 2013. The protodeacon Dominic Lamberti announced to the expectant crowd: “Habemus Papam” – “We have a Pope.” The new Pope chose the name Leo XIV.
His first and meaningful greeting to the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Basilica and to the entire world, “Peace be with you all!”, conveyed deep hope to all nations, indicating that his pontificate will continue to promote dialogue and peace, especially in places where war and interreligious intolerance still prevail.
In his brief message, he extended a warm greeting to the faithful of the Diocese of Chiclayo in Peru, where he served as bishop from 2015 to 2023. He holds dual citizenship, Peruvian and American. He is the first Pope with Peruvian nationality and also the first born in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
Some Claretian Missionary Sisters present in Rome were in St. Peter’s Square from the very first day of the Conclave and also at the moment of the new Pope’s announcement. The long-awaited “white smoke” appeared on May 8 at 6:00 PM local time. As the news spread, a crowd began to fill the square, including several sisters from the General House, eager to witness the announcement of the new Pontiff.
It was a deeply moving and awe-inspiring experience to be there, among millions of people from various nations.
The election of a new Pope always represents a moment of renewal for the Church, because we are certain that the Church is always new and constantly being renewed. This was affirmed by the Second Vatican Council with the words: “Ecclesia reformata et semper reformanda”, according to the Word of God. And a hundred years earlier, the Spirit had already inspired this in our founders, especially in Mother Antonia París, who offered her life for the renewal of the Church.
May the Claretian life and mission, alongside those who walk with us, be a bearer of signs of hope and a spirit of renewal among the people.
