Visiting the communities in Nigeria
15 November 2024Our sisters Catherine Tulengi and Lidia Alcántara left Rome on November 9th, heading to Nigeria to visit the two communities we have there. On Sunday, they arrived in Makurdi, where they were warmly welcomed by the Rev. Wilfred Chikpa Anagbe, Claretian bishop of the Diocese of Makurdi, to which we belong. The following day, he himself took them to the Aondona community, where they were received with much affection by the sisters and the two aspirants in that community.
In the following days, they had the opportunity to visit the school and hospital where the sisters work, as well as learn about the Flores del Desierto project supported by our NGO KORIMA. This project involves providing scholarships to 80 girls to give them access to education. Our sisters were deeply moved by the situation of women in this area. Parents do not consider it important for girls to go to school; by the age of 12 or 13, they are married off, leaving them confined to the home with no possibility of personal growth of any kind.
Both Cathy and Lidia are very grateful for the opportunity to witness this reality and share their life and mission with the sisters.
