World Day of Prayer for Creation, “Seeds of Peace and Hope”
1 September 2025The annual celebration of the “Day of Creation” on September 1, also known as the “Feast of Creation” or the “World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation,” is the great celebration that inspires and nourishes the broader Season of Creation that flows from it. Inspired by the rich liturgical tradition of the Orthodox Church, it was adopted by the Catholic Church in 2015.
This day invites us to repent for the times when, through our actions, we have profaned the gift of creation, and to pray for its healing. The feast honors God as Creator and commemorates the great mystery of the creation of the world. This celebration is not only about honoring “creation as the created world” that God has given us, but above all about celebrating “Creation as a mystery” at the heart of our Christian faith. It is also an opportunity to profess our faith in the Triune God as Creator: in “God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth”, in Christ “through [whom] all things were made”, and in the Holy Spirit, the “giver of life”.
Ten years after the publication of the encyclical Laudato Si’, Pope Leo XIV has promulgated the Decree for the Missa pro custodia creationis (“Mass for the Care of Creation”), as an important pastoral resource to support the establishment of this day. As a Congregation, we joyfully welcome it.
Therefore, may today (and every day of the year) be a moment to give thanks and praise to God as Creator.
