Pentecost: Renewed by the Spirit, Sent in Mission
23 May 2026As we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost, we are invited once again to contemplate one of the most profound mysteries of our faith: the gift of the Holy Spirit poured out upon the Church. Pentecost is not only a memory of an event that took place in the Upper Room in Jerusalem; it is a living reality that continues to shape, renew, and sustain the Church today.
The Holy Spirit continues to act in the life of the Church. He is the silent but powerful presence who guides, consoles, and strengthens us in every circumstance. In moments of uncertainty, He brings wisdom. In moments of weakness, He gives strength. In moments of discouragement, He awakens hope. The gifts of the Holy Spirit—wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord—are not abstract realities, but living graces that shape our daily discipleship and mission.
Pentecost also reminds us that the Church is, by its very nature, missionary. The fire of the Spirit cannot be contained; it always sends us forth. It opens our hearts beyond fear and self-preoccupation, leading us to encounter others with love and openness. Today, as in the time of the Apostles, the Spirit continues to open new paths for evangelization and communion among peoples, cultures, and generations. Wherever the Spirit is welcomed, new life is born.
As we celebrate this great feast, we are invited to renew our openness to the Holy Spirit. We ask Him to rekindle in us the fire of our vocation, to deepen our communion with one another, and to strengthen our missionary zeal. May this Pentecost be a moment of grace for each of us, a fresh outpouring of the Spirit that renews our hearts and sends us forth as witnesses of hope in today’s world.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love!
